The home remodeling space is growing like crazy and the opportunities for solid companies to expand today is huge. All too often when asked what their biggest challenge is, landscape contractors, home remodelers, custom home builders, pool companies, and architects say the same thing—finding qualified employees. There are many reasons why finding and keeping the right employees can a be very difficult for small to medium sized service businesses. A major one is that owners of these companies are tasked with many different things throughout the day. Their responsibility plate is full—most of the time overfull actually—and becoming good at recruiting is just not possible. Owners tend to start looking for employees only when they need to hire. Another problem is that a large number of owners are looking to hire from the currently unemployed pool. This cuts out a tremendous amount of qualified workers that may be looking to transition to a new role. Here's 3 tips to finding better employees.

1. ALWAYS BE LOOKING TO HIRE GREAT PEOPLE

When you are always seeking great employees, you are afforded the opportunity to make better decisions because you are not under the gun to fill a role asap. Then your trying to remember how to hire an employee as well as how to onboard them with all the new employee tax forms, etc. Recruiting cannot be turned on in times of need and then turned off.  

2. BECOME A COMPANY YOU WOULD WANT TO WORK FOR

Great employees work for great companies. In fact, some of your best prospects are probably currently employeed by your competitors. Don't get into the habit of stealing talent—that's never a good thing to get known for. Rather, work to build a company culture that is attractive and be known for being a great place to work.

3. MAKE IT EASY FOR PEOPLE TO FIND YOU AND APPLY

In today's world, candidates are not only going to reach out to your company during normal business hours by phone. It's crazy to assume that. So to make it easy for appliancants, allow them to submit resumes and applications right from your company website.
